Hindu Rao Hospital

Hindu Rao Hospital, situated in the Malka Ganj area of North Delhi, is the largest healthcare facility under the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). Established in 1911, it evolved from a 16-bed nursing home into a multi-specialty hospital with a capacity of approximately 980 beds. The hospital occupies a historically significant site atop the North Delhi Ridge, a location of strategic importance during the 1857 Revolt, where it served as a British military headquarters.

The hospital offers a wide range of medical services, including emergency care, general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, orthopedics, and more. It also serves as a referral center for patients from various dispensaries and colony hospitals managed by the MCD, as well as nearby public and private institutions. In 2013, the hospital expanded its role in medical education by establishing the North Delhi Municipal Corporation Medical College, affiliated with IP University, admitting 50 MBBS students in its inaugural batch.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hindu Rao Hospital was designated as a dedicated COVID-19 facility in June 2020. The hospital was equipped with 250 oxygen-supported beds, 17 ventilators, and 8 ICU beds to manage the surge in cases. Despite challenges, including staff protests over infrastructure concerns, the hospital played a crucial role in Delhi's healthcare response during the pandemic.
