Somatostatin is a peptide hormone used therapeutically to inhibit the release of several other hormones and gastrointestinal secretions. Indicated for conditions such as bleeding esophageal varices, carcinoid syndrome, and acromegaly, it acts rapidly to reduce hormonal activity and control bleeding. Available in freeze-dried form, it is reconstituted and administered via IV infusion or injection. Somatostatin offers temporary control of hormone-related conditions and is especially valuable in emergency gastroenterological situations.
