Vaccine Overview
Hepatitis B - Birth dose
The Hepatitis B birth dose is a critical vaccine given to newborns to prevent early transmission of the Hepatitis B virus from mother to child. It should be administered at birth or as early as possible within 24 hours of delivery to ensure maximum effectiveness. The recommended dosage is 0.5 ml, given intramuscularly in the antero-lateral side of the mid-thigh. Early vaccination plays a vital role in reducing the risk of chronic Hepatitis B infection and its long-term complications, especially in areas where the disease is common or maternal status is unknown.
